4.    Another mistaken belief is that taking out travel insurance covers holidaymakers for whatever they do. In fact, because insurance companies cover against risk, most policies will exclude, for example, accidents caused by alcohol. The good news is that most policies cover a wide range of activities, though you should always check policy wording and expect cover to be limited for extreme sports. Specialist ski insurance or backpacker travel insurance might be what you need.

5.    Cheap deals will not suit everyone. While cheap travel insurance can be perfect for travellers on a budget, it is unlikely to cover as many eventualities (or with the same benefits) as a more expensive policy. Of course, you don’t want expensive insurance just because it is expensive, so finding value is the key.
